College Counseling

College Counseling Philosophy

As a college preparatory high school, Alverno Heights Academy seeks to empower our young women to develop their talents, skills, and interests to succeed in their advancement of higher education. Here at Alverno, we offer a comprehensive College Counseling Program designed to challenge and encourage students throughout the college admission process, emphasizing student accountability and personal growth. Knowing that each student’s process is uniquely her own, Alverno provides boith structure and flexibility to assist our girls in charting their own path towards college. While we encourage our students to take ownership of their college process, our Director of College Counseling ensure that she is never without advice and support every step of the way.

Meet our Director of College Counseling

Promoting higher education and assisting families with navigating the college admissions process is Mrs. Royal’s passion, and her professional path has provided her with a unique and insightful perspective of the admissions experience. Mrs. Royal began her career by working in college recruitment, where she recruited students to attend various four-year universities; and then worked in university student services, where she was responsible for providing transitional support to admitted students. She also has extensive experience in counseling high school students with their applications to universities, having served as the Director of College Guidance at YULA Girls High School, prior to joining Alverno in the summer of 2019. Mrs. Royal continues to work in college admissions, as a Freshman Admissions Reader for UC Santa Barbara. As a proud alumna of the University of Washington, where she completed her Masters of Education with a focus on higher education access, she is an active member of the Husky Los Angeles Alumni Network. In her free time, Mrs. Royal enjoys spending time with her husband, Grant, and daughter, Charlotte. She also loves staying active by going hiking, practicing yoga, and taking spin classes.

SCOIR: Alverno's College Planning Tool

Alverno Heights Academy is pleased to announce beginning February 2020 we have implemented a new college guidance management system called SCOIR (pronounced “score”). This new, modern online system will streamline the process of requesting, processing, sending and tracking the electronic delivery of all application-related documents. More importantly, it’s extremely helpful for students and parents during the college search and selection process. On SCOIR, colleges come to life through pictures, videos, and links that highlight active student clubs and organizations. This better enables students to identify colleges that are a good fit with their personal and academic interests, which increases college retention. SCOIR also provides parents with useful financial calculators so you can determine the likely cost of attendance at different colleges and consider the affordability when deciding where to apply. These features, along with more convenient scheduling and communication tools, will help keep everyone informed and engaged throughout the college application process. SCOIR exists to help more students achieve positive outcomes, and we’re excited that our students have access to this system and the opportunities it provides.
