We just love this article from BBC News for #TeachingTuesday! According to their study, more children are drawing women scientists than they did in the 1960s and 1970s. When asked to draw a scientist, less than one percent of children in the 1960s and 1970s drew a woman. This rose to 28% between the 1980s and present day. Despite women's representation in science improving significantly since the 1960s, girls draw on average 58% of scientists as men, with boys drawing 96%. We still have a long way to go considering by 2013 women were 49% of biological scientists, 35% of chemists, and 11% of physicists and astronomers in the United States. Let's keep drawing those female scientists! #AlvernoHeightsAcademy #AlvernoHeights60 #WomenInSTEM
Alverno Heights Academy would like to extend a very special congratulations to alumna Joanne (Larkin) Harabedian '69 who was recognized as a "Woman of Distinction" for the city of Sierra Madre by Assemblymember Chris Holden last week! Joanne currently serves as the Principal of St. Rita School in Sierra Madre, a role she has held for the last 12 years although she began teaching at St. Rita in 1991. In her position, Joanne is an outstanding leader to her students, staff, and larger community. Under her leadership, the school has continued to improve and grow, while attracting a diverse set of families and students. We are so proud to not only call Joanne an alumna but a partner in Catholic education in Sierra Madre. Congratulations Joanne! #AlvernoHeightsAcademy #AlvernoHeights60 #AlvernoAlumnae #CityofSierraMadre #ChrisHolden #StRitaSchool
In Honor of Women’s History month, today we will continue with our spotlights on inspiring women in history. Dr. Ellen Ochoa is a Mexican-American woman who became the first Latina Astronaut in history. Dr. Ochoa received her Bachelor of Science in physics from San Diego State University and her Masters and Doctorate degrees in electrical engineering from Stanford University. She joined NASA in 1988 as a research engineer and made the move to Johnson Space Center in 1990. It was there that she was selected as an astronaut and went to space in 1933 on her first mission on the Space Shuttle Discovery. She would go on to fly in space four times in her career, spending around 1,000 hours in orbit. Dr. Ochoa has received the Distinguished Service Medal, which is NASA’s highest award, the Presidential Distinguished Rank Award, and countless others. She is a wonderful role model for women everywhere and a prime example to shoot for the stars! #AlvernoHeightsAcademy #WomensHistoryMonth #Shootforthestars
In honor of #WCW, Alverno Heights Academy would like to extend our best wishes to alumna Melissa "Mo" Martin '00 who will be playing in the LPGA Bank of Hope Founders Cup starting tomorrow in Phoenix, AZ. Alverno Heights Academy Head of School Julia V. Fanara P’01, P’03, & P’05 and other Heads of School in the California Association of Independent Schools (CAIS) released a joint statement on gun violence that was published in the Los Angeles Times on Sunday, March 11. The letter—written in response to the recent school shooting in Parkland, Florida—expresses condolences for the friends and family of the 17 victims and urges our leaders, both Republican and Democrat, to take action to promote safety and security in educational communities. “Never before have so many school leaders from all corners of this great nation, from every type of school, spoken with one voice to address a single issue,” the statement reads. “We are moved to do so on behalf of all of this nation’s children, whose welfare and safety it is our common duty to ensure.” Today, at 10:00 a.m. Alverno Heights Academy will stand in solidarity with schools around the country by supporting the National School Walkout. Students, faculty, and staff who wish to participate will be provided with a safe space on campus for the 17 minutes of silence intended to honor the victims at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
For most of our students at Alverno Heights Academy, Madeline L'Engle's bestselling novel "A Wrinkle in Time" was more than just required reading in their elementary years-- it was also a favorite book! Last week, after months of anticipation Ava DuVernay's "A Wrinkle in Time" was released across the country! DuVernay made history at the 2015 Golden Globes as the first woman of color to be nominated in the Best Director category and last year her documentary 13th was nominated for an Oscar. With "A Wrinkle in Time," DuVernay is once again breaking down barriers becoming the first woman of color to direct a live-action film with a budget of over $100 million. In honor of #TeachingTuesday and #WomensHistoryMonth, check out this wonderful article about DuVernay's path to the director chair!

We join the National Coalition of Girls' Schools in the #StandUpSpeakUp campaign. Now more than ever, we need to educate and embolden girls with the skills and confidence to shape their world! #AlvernoHeightsAcademy #AlvernoHeights60 #NCGS #GirldEducation
