Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Facilities Manager, performs a variety of grounds maintenance in a school environment in order to maintain the grounds clean, orderly and safe. Performs work in accordance with OSHA standards. 

Job Duties

  • Perform groundskeeping on property
  • Sweeping and blowing leaves and clippings
  • Clean site, take out trash, and clean windows
  • Operate powered equipment such as mowers, gas blowers
  • Care for established lawns by mulching, aerating, weeding, trimming, edging around flower beds,    walks, and walls
  • Prune and trim trees, shrubs and hedges properly using hand tools such as shovels, rakes, pruning saws, hedge/brush trimmers, axes, shears, pruners or chain saws.
  • Seeding, proper application of fertilizer, herbicide, pesticide, fungicide, raking, watering of trees, shrubs, plants, flowers, bulbs, seeds, and sod; grooming; dividing plants
  • Identify, flag, and report sprinkler problems
  • Provide proper upkeep of sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, fountains, planters, and other grounds features
  • Maintain and repair tools, equipment, and structures such as, but not limited to, fences, benches, and minor out building maintenance using hand and power tools
  • Keeps all ground equipment in good working order and stores all equipment and chemicals safety
  • Ability to power wash sidewalks and driveways and use of degreasers if needed
  • Assist with set-ups and break-downs for various activities on-campus: moving tables, chairs, podium, furniture, equipment etc.
  • Report problems and damages to supervisor
  • Meet schedules and timelines
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty and staff
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Basic Qualifications

  • Ability to use and correspond with telephone, emails and texts
  • Ability to stand, walk, twist, sit, bend, stoop, use hands to fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or controls on a constant basis
  • Ability to reach with hands and arms
  • Ability to push, pull, grip and squeeze various tools,products and/or items (e.g., pruning)
  • Ability to climb and work on ladders
  • Ability to walk up to 10 miles a day, sometimes uphill and on uneven terrain, often with equipment
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 75 pounds
  • Must be able to work in an outside environment exposed to elements
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to changing work demands
  • Maintain high level of concentration and attention to detail for extended periods of time
  • Maintain a high level of ethical and professional standards in accordance with Alverno’s policy

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish)

This position may entail: 

  • Potential exposure to blood borne pathogens
  • Noise level may be loud at times and use of earplugs may be required (e.g., outdoor conditions, backpack blowers, running mowers, weed-wackers)
  • Weekend or off-hours work

Required of all applicants after hiring: 

  • A valid State of California driver’s license and automobile insurance
  • A recent DMV Driver’s Record Report
  • Certification of Virtus training
  • LiveScan fingerprinting
  • TB Risk Assessment completion as required by the State of California

Compensation: $13.00/hr
