CONSERVATORY COURSES 2017
Period 1: Language Arts Advancement/Creative Narratives from 8:00 a.m. to 8:50 a.m.
Creative Narratives: This class is designed to helps students focus on polishing their language arts skills. Students will read a wide variety of short fiction and non-fiction, as well as write their own descriptive, narrative, expository and persuasive compositions using correct grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and paragraph construction. Students will also learn and practice useful strategies for succeeding on the various language portions of the HSPT and ISEE placements tests.
Period 2: Drama, Dance and Improvisation from 8:55 a.m. to 9:40 a.m.
The Art of Performing Arts: Besides having loads of fun, the purpose of this course is to provide an understanding of the fundamentals of theatrical improvisation and a guide to improvisational choices through the use of theater games and exercise. This course will emphasize creative expression and physical movement.
Break: 9:40 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
Period 3: World of Science from 10:05 a.m. to 10:50 a.m.
Fun with Experiments: The purpose of this course is to provide an understanding of the fundamentals of scientific processes, discovery and investigation. This course require students to design and perform fun science experiments while examining science in the world around us.
Period 4: Leadership for Middle School Girls from 10:55 a.m. to 11:40 a.m.
Empowerment for Girls/Bonding: During this course, students will be exploring a number of different topics including women in business, women in the media, and women in leadership. Students will be given the opportunity to practice public speaking skills, conflict resolution, and project management through a number of hands on activities and projects. The work done in this course speaks exactly to Alverno’s mission of empowering each young woman to be exactly the person she wants to be.
Lunch: 11:40 a.m. to 12:25 p.m.
Period 5: Promotion in Algebraic Computation from 12:30 p.m. to 1:15 p.m.
Algebra Academy: Students will focus on a variety of engaging and challenging math activities that will allow students to master word problems, increase their mathematical study skills, support feelings of comfort with mathematical formulas and algebraic functions as well as increase their focus skills in math. Daily practice will be implemented and students will benefit from this course during the regular academic school year. This class will serve as a fantastic prep for the HSPT and ISEE placements tests.
Period 6: Mixed Media from 1:20 p.m. to 2:05 p.m.
Visual and Performing Arts: This hands-on class will use mixed media to create a variety of original craft and fine art projects. Students will gain experience exploring different art materials and techniques. During the course students will learn drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, paper-mache and sculpture
Break: 2:05 p.m. to 2:15 p.m.
Period 7: Bonus Class Computer Science, Zumba, Culinary Arts, Sign Language from 2:15 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Designed to give students the opportunity to explore a number of different subject areas, this class will vary from week to week. Over the course of 5 weeks, students will be able to experience fun and innovative classes taught by Alverno Heights Academy’s own faculty and staff. These classes will include Computer Science (June 13-June 16), Zumba (June 19-June 23), Culinary Arts (June 26-June 30), Zumba (July 5-July 7), and American Sign Language (July 10-July 13).

July 8: Practice HSPT for Academic Summer Conservatory for Middle School Girls Students at 9:00 a.m. (Learning Technology Center)
July 10-July 13: Bonus Class is American Sign Language
July 13: Graduation Ceremony at 6:30 p.m. (Villa del Sol d’Oro) (All weeks of Academic Summer Conservatory for Middle School Girls)
August 7- August 31: Practice HSPT Score Report Meetings with Ms. Sara A. McCarthy ’05, Director of Admissions and Enrollment Management
