The old adage that “defense wins games” rang true in the final away game of the season for the Alverno Jaguars.  Despite being peppered with shots by the Ramona Convent Tigers offense, the Jaguars held strong to a 3-0 victory.

Team co-captain junior midfielder Beatriz Rivas (16) drove through a streak of Tigers and shot from distance in the 16th minute off a pass from freshman defender Helen Abascal (3) to give the Jaguars a 1-0 lead.  In the 29th minute, freshman goalkeeper Amanda Mercado (0) made a breathtaking save when a cross from the outside found a Tigers player in the penalty box one-on-one with Mercado.

In the 52nd minute, freshman forward Paola Munoz (20) was able to convert a corner kick from team co-captain junior midfielder Megan Cavender (22) to increase the lead to 2-0.  The Tigers defense gave up 4 corner kicks in the match.  In the 66th minute, senior defender Nikki Oberhammer (17) cleared a ball out to Munoz who battled through the Tigers defense for another goal to give the Jaguars the 3-0 win.

Senior forward Natalie Scigliano (5) and team co-captain senior midfielder Ally Mercado (8) combined with Rivas and Munoz for the Jaguars’ 5 shots on goal.  The pressure from the Jaguars starting backline of Oberhammer, junior Elisia Bendy (2), sophomore Danielle Heltsley (15), and Abascal kept the Tigers to 8 shots on goal and 2 corner kicks.  Amanda Mercado recorded her eighth clean slate of the season.

The Jaguars improve their record to 7-2 (9-7 overall) and are guaranteed a playoff berth.   They will face Holy Family at the Glendale Sports Complex on Tuesday, February 6, 2018, and celebrate Senior Night.
