Alverno Bakes Up to Support Girls’ Education

For the seventh year in a row, Alverno Heights Academy students will work together over the next week to raise funds for She’s the First through their annual #BakeAChange event. Every fall, She’s the First supporters (of all ages) unite to raise money for girls’ education by hosting colorful bake sales at school, in their community, and at the office.

She’s the First, based in New York City, sponsors girls’ education in low-income countries, through creative and innovative means — particularly leveraging the leadership of students in the US and social media. Currently, She’s the First supports over 923 scholars in countries around the world including Ethiopia, India, Nepal, Peru, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, and The Gambia.

This year, like last, the funds raised by the students at Alverno will go to benefit Humu, a young student in Sierra Leone. One year of education for Humu including tuition, empowerment programs, and boarding costs $1,400 so our goal is to surpass that amount to be able to support another wonderful young woman as well!

Previously, Alverno Heights Academy students have helped to provide an empowering educational experience to young women of the Shanti Bhavan School in India. The school provides holistic, quality education to India’s most underprivileged children, mostly from the lower caste or the Dalits to allow them to succeed in the modern global workplace. By breaking the cycle of poverty for these children, while modeling civic engagement and charitable giving, Shanti Bhavan aims to create a generation of changemakers and leaders in India who will go on to uplift their communities out of poverty. The school was recently featured in a documentary series on Netflix called “Daughters of Destiny.” Students will be watching episodes from the documentary series in the weeks leading up to Founders’ Day (October 6) and International Day of the Girl (October 11).

Starting tomorrow, August 31 students will be able to purchase cupcakes, lasagna, macaroni and cheese, and other items ($1-$4) as well as participate in activities to help raise funds on campus! Plus, new this year is the introduction of the Charity Miles App. Every mile students or anyone logs in the app turns into a donation to She’s the First, thanks to generous corporate sponsors!
