The Alverno Jaguars hosted the California Academy of Math and Science Rebels in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 7 Playoffs. After a scoreless draw in regulation time, the Jaguars won in overtime 1-0.
The Jaguars’ first offensive threat came in the 26th minute when team co-captain senior defender Nicole Lianto (6) passed to sophomore midfielder Beatriz Rivas (16). Rivas connected with junior midfielder Jazmin Rebollo (19), but the cross to co-captain senior forward Britni Delgado (11) was intercepted by a charging Rebels goalkeeper. In the 37th minute, Rebollo passed to Delgado in the corner who connected with Rivas in the penalty box, but Rivas’s shot was saved by the diving goalkeeper. In stoppage time, Delgado received a throw-in from freshman defender Cassie Lianto (10) and connected with Rebollo, but Rebollo’s shot was saved by the goalkeeper.
The Jaguars attack continued into the second half. In the 58th minute, Rebollo took a pass from Cassie Lianto and connected with junior forward Natalie Scigliano (5). Scigliano found Rivas making a run, but Rivas’s shot was saved by the leaping goalkeeper. In the 64th minute, Rivas received a throw-in from sophomore defender Elisia Bendy (2) and passed to Nicole Lianto. Lianto’s through-ball to Rebollo in the penalty box was intercepted by the Rebels goalkeeper. In the 66th minute, Delgado passed back to sophomore midfielder Megan Cavender (22) whose shot from outside the penalty box was saved by the goalkeeper. In the 75th minute, Rivas also tried a shot from distance that was saved by the goalkeeper.
The impenetrable Jaguars defense consisting of Nicole Lianto, junior Nikki Oberhammer (17), Bendy, Cassie Lianto, and junior goalkeeper Ayanna Melin (1) held the Rebels to only 1 shot on goal and allowed no corner kicks. The teams were in a scoreless stalemate after regulation.
In the 7th minute of overtime, the Rebels were called for a handball. Rebollo’s free kick was deflected by a Rebels player for an own goal.
The Jaguars advance to the quarterfinal round to face Rancho Mirage High School on Friday, February 24, 2017, at the Rancho Mirage campus.
