Alverno Jaguars Celebrate Wins Over Holy Family Gaels in Basketball and Soccer This Week

TeamBoth the Alverno Heights Academy Varsity Basketball and Varsity Soccer teams are celebrating exciting victories over the Holy Family Gaels this week.

The Varsity Basketball team faced the Gaels on Tuesday, January 10 in a nail-biting game that ended with the first league win for the team this season. Within the first 2 minutes, junior Hailey Jiang ‘18, hit two three-pointers back to back; ending the game with a total of four three-pointers made.

From start to finish, the game was close; always within six points of each other. The Jaguars logged a total of thirty eight rebounds, thirteen steals, and eleven blocks.

Junior Hailey Jiang ‘18 was the top scorer of the night with thirteen points total and senior Allison Joseph ‘17 right behind with a total of eight points; Allison also lead the team in rebounds, totaling fourteen.

The game came down to the Jaguars needing to ensure no shots and no fouls were given in the last minute and a half to keep the three point lead. The game ended 31-28.

DSC_1057On Wednesday, January 11 the Varsity Soccer team pulled out a 5-0 win against the Gaels in their Horizon League home opener. The Jaguars dominated in the first half to lead 5-0 at halftime. Tightened defense in the second half for both teams prevented any more scoring.

The Jaguars offense bombarded the Gaels with ten shots on goal and three corner kicks in the first half and five shots on goal and one corner kick in the second half. Team co-captain senior forward Larissa Hernandez ’17 had a shot blocked in the 14th minute, but co-captain junior midfielder Subrina Hamdan ’18 was able to put it back in for the goal. Hamdan scored again in the 15th minute off a free kick. In the 16th minute, junior defender Nikki Oberhammer ’18 was able to connect with junior midfielder Jazmin Rebollo ‘18. Rebollo ‘18 dribbled past defenders to find sophomore forward Megan Cavender ’19 in the box for another goal. Hernandez ’17 assisted a goal with a pass to sophomore midfielder Beatriz Rivas ’19 who scored in the 19th minute. Hernandez ’17 put the ball in the goal herself in the 36th minute off a pass from junior midfielder Natalie Scigliano ‘8.

The Jaguars backline of co-captain senior Nicole Lianto ‘17, Oberhammer ‘18, sophomore Elisia Bendy ‘19, and freshman Cassie Lianto ’20 did not DSC_1110allow a shot on goal throughout the whole match. Junior goalkeeper Ayanna Melin ’18 had only one save of a free kick and earned her second clean slate of the season.

Varsity Basketball will play the Bishop Conaty-Our Lady of Loretto High School Wildcats on Tuesday, January 17 at Bishop Conaty-Our Lady of Loretto High School in Los Angeles and soccer will face the Ramona Convent Tigers on Wednesday, January 18 at the Glendale Sports Complex.
